Abstract:
PURPOSE:To convert biphenyl compounds which are only slightly decomposable in waste matter into useful methane by converting the biphenyl compounds into benzoic acid compounds using a specific microorganism or a microbial cell treated material and then decomposing the resultant benzoic acid compounds using an anaerobic microorganismic group. CONSTITUTION:Biphenyl compounds are converted into benzoic acid compounds using a microorganism having ability of metabolizing a biphenyl compounds or a microbial cell treated material containing an enzyme produced by the above-mentioned microorganism and then these compounds are decomposed into methane and carbon dioxide using an anaerobic microorganismic group. Furthermore, the microorganism having ability of metabolizing the above- mentioned biphenyl compounds (preferably biphenyl) is preferably a transformed microorganism into which a biphenyl compound-metabolizing gene is transduced and the above-mentioned gene is preferably bphABCD gene having 9.4Kb base pair.
