PURPOSE: To display the character of an optional color as a color image by using the synthesized signal of a luminance signal and a carrier chrominance signal synchronized with a color synchronizing signal in a composite video signal to which the character is to be interrupted as a display character signal.

CONSTITUTION: At a carrier chrominance signal generation part 4 and a luminance signal generation part 3, the carrier chrominance signal (f) as the color components of a character signal and the luminance signal (e) as luminance components are respectively generated based on character data C sent from a character generator part 2. In this case, color synchronizing signal components are extracted from the composite video signal I inputted at a color phase control part 6 and a control signal (d) for maintaining phase difference from the color synchronizing signal corresponding to desired color display and the phase of the carrier chrominance signal (f) generated at the carrier chrominance signal generation part 4 is generated. The data of the character display part of the inputted composite video signal I are replaced with the character signal (g) for which the carrier chrominance signal (f) and the luminance signal (e) are synthesized by a switching signal (b) generated at a display control part 1. Thus, the character with the color is displayed.
