PURPOSE: To improve the smoothness and gloss of a printing paper by arranging a dryer roll and a calender roll sequentially between a varnish application unit and a paper delivery section of a sheet printing press.

CONSTITUTION: A dryer roll and a calender roll are arranged sequentially between a varnish application unit and a paper delivery section of a sheet printing press. A printing paper coated with a varnish with the varnish application unit is first dried as ragged on the surface of the varnish with the dryer roll. Then, the printing paper thus dried is pressurized with the calender roll to make the ragged varnish-coated surface smooth, producing a gloss on the surface of the printing paper. For example, a dryer roll 18 and an impression cylinder 19 are arranged sequentially between a varnish application unit 5 and a paper delivery section 6 of the sheet printing press and further, a calender roll 20 contacting the impression cylinder 19 is provided. After coated with a varnish by a varnish application unit 5, the printed paper is dogged with the dryer roll 18 and the varnish-coated layer is dried with the surface being rugged.
