Abstract:
PURPOSE:To always provide an optimum valve timing irrespective of operating mode, by a method wherein it is detected whether an engine is driven with all cylinders operated, and according to such result or an operating condition, a valve timing is set. CONSTITUTION:During low load operation, operation is made by means of the reduced number of cylinders and during high load operation, operation is made by means of the total number of the cylinders, and such operations are selectively effected according to the operating condition of an engine. In which case, a varying valve timing mechanism 1 for varying the valve timing of an engine, a detecting means 2 for detecting the operating condition of an engine, and a second detecting means 3 for detecting whether an engine is driven with all cylinders operated or with the reduced number of cylinders operated are provided. In response to an output signal from the detecting means 3 and according to an operating condition detected by the detecting mechanism 3 and according to an operating condition detected by the detecting means 2, a valve timing is set by a setting means a. According to the set valve timing, the varying valve timing mechanism 1 is controlled through a driving means 4.
