PURPOSE: To eliminate the need for an electrostatic charger and improve reliability and to realize a compact equipment, by laminating a striped scanning electrode, an insulating layer, a stripe signal electrode, and a photoconductive layer on an insulating base and constitute into a single device.

CONSTITUTION: The striped scanning electrode 2 is provided on the insulating base 1 and the insulating layer 3 is formed thereupon. Then, a striped signal electrode 4 is provided on the insulating layer 3 at right angle to the electrode 2, and the photoconductive layer 5 is laminated thereupon. All electrodes 2 are held at a negative potential and all electrodes 4 are held "0" or at positive potential, producing a magnetic field in the layer 5. When all electrodes 2 and 4 are held "0", an electric field is established between positive holes acquired on the surface of the layer 5 and the electrodes 2 or 4. Then, a light projection image from an original is supplied to form an electromagnetic latent image. This is developed with positively charged toner to obtain a visible image, which is transferred to recording paper.
