PURPOSE: To decreasing the space between the short side of a casting mold and solidified shell by calculating the center of the turning radius of the short side from the casting speed and the moving speed of the short side in the stage of changing the width of a billet and moving the inclination of the short side along the turning plane possessing commonly the above-described turning center.
CONSTITUTION: The top surface of the short side 1 of a casting mold is displaced by ΔT in the initial period of moving the short side 1 and the length β from the bottom end of the side 1 at the point A' where the solidified shell 2a of a billet arrives is determined from the calculation equation including the casting speed and the moving speed of the short side then the point A' is set at a turning center P and the inclination of the side 1 is moved along the rotation plane possessing commonly the center P. The turning center P' of the side 1 is similarly set in the final period of moving the side 1 and the length β' from the top end of the side 1 is determined by the prescribed calculation equation then the inclination of the side 1 is moved along the rotation plane possessing commonly the center P'. Generation of an air gap between the short side of the casting mold and the solidified shell of the billet is thus obviated.
