PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful for agriculture, particularly as agricultural chemicals, by reacting hydroxymethylcyclopropylglycine derivative as a raw material with 2-nitrophenylselenyl cyanide, oxidizing the reaction product, and heating the resultant product, etc.

CONSTITUTION: A hydroxymethylcyclopropylglycine derivative expressed by formula I (R4 is a protecting group of the amino group; R5 is lower alkyl or aralkyl) is reacted with 2-nitrophenylselenyl cyanide expressed by formula II to form an o-nitrophenylselenium derivative expressed by formula III, which is then oxidized with O3, etc. to afford a selenoxide. The resultant selenoxide is heated in an organic solvent, e.g. toluene, to give the aimed compound expressed by formula IV (R1 is R4; R2 and R5), which is hydrolyzed with a base, e.g. KOH. The amino group is then removed with a weak acid, etc. to afford the aimed compound expressed by formula IV (R1 and R2 are H), e.g. (2S*,3S*)-(2-methylenecyclopropyl)-glycine.
