PURPOSE: To provide a selective reduction process capable of reducing only triple bond selectively and efficiently to cis-double bond, and applicable for industrial mass-synthesis, by using a specific metal carbonyl compound or its complex as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: The triple bond of a triple bond-containing compound of formula I (R1 and R2 are alkyl, aryl or alkenyl) (e.g. 1-phenyl-1-propyne) is reduced in hydrogen stream in the presence of a catalyst comprising a metal carbonyl compound of formula II (M is VIB-group metal element; R is benzene; w is 1 or 2; x is 3W6; y is 0 or 1; z is 0W3) or its complex (e.g. methylbenzoate tricarbonyl chromium) to obtain a cis-double bond (e.g. cis-β-methylstyrene). The amount of the catalyst is preferably 10-5W30mol% based on the compound having a triple bond.
