PURPOSE: To detect a medium in plural positions with one sensor and detection circuit and to simplify the circuit in, for example, a booking machine which handles pass books and cut forms by transferring a detection section to the detection position which precedes a medium.

CONSTITUTION: A pass book A is fed into the medium detection section D of a conveyance section E, and a sensor 1 for detecting the medium is in a detection position (d) and detects the insertion of the pass book A. A start command I is emitted from a medium control section 5 by a detection signal S, and a sensor position control section 9 emits a control signal G to start a monitor M2. The sensor 1 moves rightward and a control signal J is emitted from a discrimination section 10 by the pulse signal F from a sensor 7 for position detection, by which the rotation of a belt B is stopped. The sensor 1 stops upon arriving at the position (c). On the other hand, the section 5 receiving the signal J emits a driving command H, by which the pass book A is fed into a code read section C. The control section 13 performs the read processing of the codes marked on the pass book A according to the signal S. The pass book A is conveyed to a printing section P by the similar control.
