PURPOSE: To obtain a magnetic head which excels in the wear resistance and is also suited to a magnetic tape having high resistance by using a C type core that is produced by jointing the sloping surfaces of a wear resistant member and a thin plate.

CONSTITUTION: A thin plate 9 made of a magnetic material having the high saturation magnetic flux density, a core member 10 made of a magnetic material having small high frequency loss and a wear resistant member 7 are joined together. Then a groove 13 is formed to the member 10. Thus C type cores 5 and 5' are produced. Thin plates 15 and 16 having the high saturation magnetic flux density characteristics are adhered to both sides of a cose member 14. Then this block 17 is sliced to obtain an I type core 6. A coil 4 is inserted into the core 6, and a gap spacer 18 is inserted between the core 6 and each end of cores 5 and 5' and joined together. Then the upper surfaces of cores 5 and 5' and 6 are polished repectively. As a result, a magnetic head having the stable characteristics is obtained with a merit that the magnetic flux is increased at a place near the magnetic gap.
