To prevent an abnormal image caused by shock jitter from being formed on second and subsequent sheets even when consecutive paper passing is carried out by using cardboard.
The transfer device is equipped with: a plurality of photoreceptors 1a, 1b, 1c and 1d; an intermediate transfer belt 10 to which a toner image is primarily transferred from the photoreceptors 1a, 1b, 1c and 1d and which is stretched by a driving roller 20 and a driven roller 21; and a secondary transfer roller 22 transferring the image on the intermediate transfer belt to transfer material. Length L1 from a spot where the intermediate transfer belt comes into contact with the final-stage photoreceptor 1d out of the photoreceptors 1a, 1b, 1c and 1d to the secondary transfer roller 22 in a belt moving direction is twice or more as long as the maximum paper passing length L2 in the advancing direction of the transfer material in the image forming apparatus, and also transfer processing that secondary transfer to the preceding transfer material out of the adjacent transfer materials in the consecutive paper passing is finished before starting the primary transfer for the following transfer material.
