To provide a simple and practical method to remove mist of fats and oils contained in exhaust gas and perform dry type exhaust gas treatment when iron scrap containing fats and oils is molten.
In a melt furnace 1 for scrap having a dry type exhaust gas treating device, when iron scrap containing fats and oils is molten, exhaust gas 4 from the melt furnace 1 is cooled to 300°C or less. Powder coke with a grain size of 0.1-1.0mm is dispersed in an exhaust gas flow in an exhaust gas duct situated upper stream from a dust collecting device 3, and mist of fats and oils in exhaust gas is adsorbed. Further, a mixture of powder coke containing fats and oils collected by the dust collecting device 3 and melt furnace dust is fed in a filling layer of solid scrap in the melt furnace 1.
