Abstract:

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a small radiation loss and a stable branching ratio by providing an input waveguide which inputs light, two output waveguides which output light, and a multimode waveguide which is arranged between the input waveguide and two output waveguides and generate mode light.
SOLUTION: The multimode waveguide (II) of a length L is arranged between the input waveguide (I) of a width (w) and the two output waveguides (III) having a width (w) and an initial waveguide interval (d). To make the multimode waveguide (II) asymmetrical, a part of the core at the input end of the multimode waveguide (II) is made small by δ and the distance between the core flank and center line is put back gradually in the travel direction of light according to a function a(z). Consequently, the phase speed of the light propagated in the multimode waveguide (II) becomes asymmetrical about the center line. Consequently, the peaks of a two-peak light intensity distribution appearing owing to mode interference has a difference in height to actualize the asymmetry of the branching ratio.
