Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a valve assembly using a pneumatic valve spring so as to deal with fatigue related failure of a spring device resulting from the repetitive compression and decompression cycles in poppet-style valves of an internal combustion engine.SOLUTION: A first piston 34 radially extends from a stem 50 of a valve 30 and is enclosed within a housing 32. A second piston 36 is fixed to the distal end 54 of the stem 50 and seals against the housing 32. A first chamber 74 is defined by the first piston 34, the second piston 36, and the housing 32, and receives a compressed gas and maintains a desired gas pressure. A spring device 38 is disposed between the first piston 34 and the housing 32. During normal operation of an engine, the gas pressure within the first chamber 74 seals a head 48 of the valve 30 against a valve seat 20 with the spring device 38 in a compressed arrangement, and during periods of insufficient gas pressure, the spring device 38 biases the valve 30 to seal against the valve seat 20.
