A VLC mechanism 20 is mainly composed of an electric actuator 21 arranged in a left side of a cylinder head 1, a drive lever 22 with a base end attached to a shaft 21a of the electric actuator 21, a hollow control shaft 23 held/driven by the drive lever 22, a front shaft lever 24 swingably supporting the control shaft 23 on a front cam holder 11, a middle shaft lever 25 swingably supporting the control shaft 23 on middle cam holders 12-14, a roller ring 26 with the control shaft 23 loosely fit into its base end, and a roller 28 rotatably supported on a tip of the roller ring 26 via a roller shaft 27.
