PURPOSE: To ideally control the control stability and the riding comfortableness of a vehicle by changing the extension side damping force characteristics of a shock absorber in a prescribed mode, based on the detected result of the running condition of the vehicle.
CONSTITUTION: In a control device in which an actuator 17 is driven by a control circuit 15 based on the output of an acceleration sensor 11 so as to adjust the opening of a control valve 60 and make the damping force characteristic of a shock absorber variable, it is provided with a control mode changeover circuit 19 changing the control mode of damping force based on input signals from a manual switch, a vehicle speed sensor, and the like. In the control circuit 15, a signal showing sprung speed is produced by integrating an acceleration detected signal in an integration circuit 15a, and a mode controlling damping force characteristic is judged based on the comparison result of the sprung speed with a threshold value in a comparison circuit 15b. Further according to the detected result of a vehicle running condition, the extension side damping force characteristics of the shock absorber in a H-S mode and a M-M mode is changed.
