Abstract:
To provide a variable dispersion compensator which suppresses power consumption and has a fast response rate.
The variable dispersion compensator 1 is equipped with: a substrate 4; an optical waveguide 8 held on the substrate and having a grating which causes Bragg reflection in the inputted light signal at a specified wavelength; a heater 3 disposed on the substrate near the grating; and a temperature controlling device 6 to control the heater to impart specified temperature distribution to the grating. The thermal conductivity k of the substrate is ≤5 W/(K m), and the thickness of the substrate is in the range of ≥(0.018×k) mm and ≤(0.46×k) mm.
