To provide a new group delay time imparting unit which has a wide dynamic range and also has small-sized, simple constitution.
The variable group delay time imparting unit which gives a specified group delay time to incident light twice and variably rotates a polarization state after the group delay time is given firstly and before the group delay time is given secondly and is characterized in that the group delay time is given twice by one birefringent medium 3a.
