Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To discriminate whether the abnormality of the detecting device exists on a light emitting side or a light receiving side, or is caused by external factor such as dirt, in the vehicle detecting device for detecting the car body of an automobile by opposing a plurality of vertically arranged light emitting elements and light receiving elements to each other to sandwich the automobile.
SOLUTION: Under a condition that the automobile does not exist, a first diagnostic operation to perform detective operation between the light emitting element and its corresponding light receiving element, and a second diagnostic operation to detect a light from the light emitting element by the light receiving elements positioned near to each other in vertical direction except for the corresponding light receiving element are performed. On the basis of the detected results obtained by the first and second diagnostic operations, discrimination is executed whether the abnormality is caused by the light emitting element, the light receiving element, or the external factor such as dirt.
