Abstract:
PURPOSE: To eliminate the need for initial setting on position and azimuth and to enable to correct vehicle azimuth as well as vehicle position even after no positional and azimuth correction were made over long distance during driving, relating to a vehicle travel azimuth calculating device used for an on-vehicle navigation unit.
CONSTITUTION: With the use of a GPS receiver 1 and a speed sensor 4, if the difference between the travel distance of the GPS receiver position in a specified time period and the integrated distance by the speed sensor is below a specified value, the GPS reception data is taken as effective. In that case, straight advance section of the vehicle is obtained by comparing the GPD travel distance for a specified time period with multiple data. Vehicle azimuth is calculated from bath latitude and longitude differences between the first and the last positions in the straight advance section, and if the relative travel angle of the vehicle within a specified time period is above the specified value, the vehicle azimuth is corrected.
