The video display apparatus 100 detects a side panel 16:9 video signal by using an aspect information signal 71 of a transmitter side, a side panel information signal 72 of a demodulator side, an OSD information signal 73 of the demodulator side, a side panel detecting circuit 51, an aspect detecting circuit 52, and a static image detecting circuit 53. These detecting means are switched or combined as necessary, thereby realizing side panel determination with high accuracy and less erroneous detection. The luminance level of the side panel 16:9 video signal is detected by a black detecting circuit 22, a dark part detecting circuit 24, a bright part detecting circuit 26, and an ABL circuit 30; the luminance level of the video signal is obtained by a video luminance level detecting circuit 61; and image quality correction corresponding to a side panel detection result and a video luminance level detection result is performed as an image quality control signal 4 by an image quality control device 63 in an image quality processing device 20.
