PURPOSE: To increase the sectional size of a consumable electrode and to obtain a long- sized ingot by connecting a large-sized cylindrical solidifying part and cylindrical melting part of which the cross sectional shapes of the inside surfaces are approximately respectively rectangular and are approximately elliptical via a reducing tapered part to constitute a water-cooled casting mold.
CONSTITUTION: The water-cooled casting mold 1 has the shape in which the cylindrical electroslag melting part 1A having the approximately elliptical cross sectional shape on the inside surface and the cylindrical solidifying part 1C having likewise the approximately rectangular cross sectional shape are connected via the reducing tapered part 1B. The long axis of the ellipse of the melting part 1A and the inside diameter of the short axis of the ellipse thereof are made respectively larger than the length on the long side of the rectangular shape of the part 1C and the length on the short side of the rectangular shape thereof. A stool 2 is inserted into the upright casting mold 1 from below the bottom thereof and is positioned in the upper part of the solidifying part 1C and a slag material and the consumable electrode 3 having a circular cross sectional shape are inserted into the mold 1 from above the mold in the stage of executing electroslag remelting in the mold 1. The electrode 3 having large capacity is made usable and the long-sized slab 5 is obtd. if the slab 5 is formed by electroslag refining.
