To obtain a resin capable of being dispersed or dissolved in water without neutralization with an amine by introducing, as functional groups, a polyalkylene glycol group and/or a hydroxyl group, and another type of a nonionic functional group.
This water-dispersible resin is preferably obtained by copolymerizing an ethylenic monomer having a polyalkylene glycol group and/or hydroxyl group and an ethylenic monomer having other type of nonionic functional group. It is also preferred to use a resin obtained by copolymerizing an ethylenic monomer having a polyalkylene glycol group and/or an ethylenic monomer having a hydroxyl group, and an ethylenic monomer having a hydrophobic nonionic functional group. When using the water-dispersible resin, an aqueous paint free of any base such as an amine can be obtained. After coating the aqueous paint, a clear paint is further coated to obtain a built-up film of the aqueous base paint/clear paint, which does not undergo yellowing.
