To decrease the loss generating in a groove in an array type waveguide embedded optical circuit.
The circuit comprises a waveguide layer 12, a groove 13 formed in the waveguide layer 12, and a plurality of pairs of spot size converting elements opposing to each other via the groove 13. Each spot size converting element includes: a first optical waveguide part comprising a first core and a first clad; and a second optical waveguide part comprising a second core as an extended part of the first clad and a second clad. In this structure, as the beam spot is enlarged in the groove, the loss due to diffraction can be significantly decreased. Thus, the diffraction loss in each channel can be decreased while making use of the advantage of a waveguide embedded optical circuit that the circuit can be made small in size.
