To reduce degradation by four light wave mixing(FWM) in a fiber.
Optical signals intensity-modulated by an RZ(return-to-zero) code are sent out by a light transmitter and setting is performed so as to turn the bit phases of respective wavelengths to O or π at the output point 115 of this wavelength multiplex light transmitter. The FWM is not generated between the transmission wavelengths of the different bit phases. Even when the FWM is generated between the transmission wavelengths provided with the same bit phase, when the wavelength of FWM light is made to match only with the optical signals of the different bit phase, a degradation amount is reduced. In such a manner, the degradation by the FWM is suppressed and wavelength multiplex transmission upto about 7 waves in equal wavelength intervals is made possible.
