To provide a wire-adjusting mechanism and a wire-adjusting method for an image reading device, capable of surely performing tension adjusting the operation of the wire so that two carriages are parallel to each other, by easily correcting variance in elastic force of a spring arranged at a free end on each side of the wire, even if such a variance is found.
First adjusting plates 24, supporting ends on one side 4A of the respective wires 4 located on both sides of the carriages 2 and 3, and second adjusting plates 30 supporting the ends of the other side 4B of the respective wires located on both sides of the carriages 2 and 3 via springs 8 which are vibration-absorbing members are provided in a drive mechanism. The first adjusting plates 24 and the second adjusting plates 30 for the wires 4 are provided freely positionally adjustable in the length direction of the wires 4.
