To provide a wireless communication system that can quickly cope with an extension request of a base station accompanying increase in subscriber stations.
Base stations B1, B5 are connected respectively to subscriber stations A1, A3 via wireless channels as active systems. Base stations B2, B6 make communication with the subscriber stations A1, A3 as standby systems of the base stations B1, B5 respectively on the occurrence of a fault in the base station 1, or B5 or the both. Thus, the base station B2 can attain transmission reception via the wireless channels using the same frequency as that of the base station B1. When a subscriber station is added, the base station B2 of the standby system with respect to the base station B1 switches the polarized wave of an antenna 9 available of polarized waves from V polarized wave into H polarized wave. The new subscriber station can make communication with the base station B2 by using the H polarized wave. Thus, the wireless channel can quickly be extended with respect to the increased number of subscriber numbers without the need for addition of a new base station.
