Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide pharmaceutical compositions for reducing insulin resistance, hyperglycemia, insulinemia, obesity, hyperlipidemia and hyperlipoproteinemia, for regulating body fat storage, and for treating diabetes, obesity and/or atherosclerosis.SOLUTION: The invention provides a composition for modifying metabolism of glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) in animals comprising an inhibitor of dipeptidyl peptidase that inactivates GLP-1 or a pharmaceutical acceptable salt thereof, where the inhibitor is administered in an amount sufficient to inhibit the dipeptidyl peptidase proteolysis of GLP-1. The pharmaceutical composition for use in treatment of Type II diabetes in an adult, where the inhibitor is administered at a dosage of 0.01-2000 mg/day, which is sufficient to treat Type II diabetes but not to suppress the human immune system. In certain embodiments of the pharmaceutical composition, the inhibitor is represented by the following formula.SELECTED DRAWING: None
