Abstract:
In a cutting insert, which has opposing upper and lower surfaces and side surfaces that connect same and in which a portion of the intersecting ridge between the upper surface and a side surface functions as a cutting edge and the section of the side surface in contact with the intersecting ridge section that is opposite the cutting edge intersects with the upper surface at an acute angle, a structure is provided such that slipping movements do not occur easily even when cutting resistance acts on the cutting edge. On at least a portion of the lower surface (3), a sloped surface (12), which gradually approaches the upper surface (2) with increased distance from the side surface section (4b) that is on the opposite side from the cutting edge (8), is formed. Because cutting resistance acting on the cutting edge (8) is resolved into a force perpendicular to and a force parallel to the sloped surface (12), a portion of the cutting resistance acts on the side surface section (4b). As a result, frictional resistance between the side surface section (4b) and the side surface (24) of the insert seat (22) is increased.
