Abstract:
Provided is a diaphragm for alkaline water electrolysis: having excellent characteristics that are generally required by diaphragms for alkaline water electrolysis (in other words: (1) gas does not pass through the diaphragm; (2) the diaphragm is permeable to ions; (3) the diaphragm prevents shorting between electrodes; and (4) the diaphragm is provided with mechanical strength and chemical strength against alkaline water); and is capable of minimizing a rise in voltage caused by gas, which is generated at an electrode during electrolysis, adhering to the diaphragm surface. This diaphragm for alkaline water electrolysis is provided with an ion-permeable membrane, and a porous reinforcement body positioned on one or both sides of the ion-permeable membrane. The ion-permeable membrane is composed of a polymer having medium-acidic ion exchange groups, weakly-acidic ion exchange groups, strong basic ion exchange groups, medium basic ion exchange groups, or weak basic ion exchange groups. The porous reinforcement body exhibits wettability with respect to a potassium hydroxide aqueous solution with a concentration of 30 wt%.
