Abstract:

The invention features an improved method for treating psychiatric disorders, such as mood disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), phobias, substance abuse or dependency, and psychotic disorders, and other conditions, e.g., cardiovascular disease and cancer, using omega-3 fatty acids. The invention further provides methods of enhancing neurodevelopment and delaying premature pregnancy using omega-3 fatty acids. In this improved method, omega-3 fatty acids are delivered via a hydrophobic carrier, and this method of delivery reduces the time of onset of therapeutic effect. Examples of omega-3 fatty acids include eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, and alpha-linolenic acid.
