Abstract:
Formable spreader and/or sanding apparatus (34) for repairing damaged automobile body lines. The apparatus (34) includes a body (32) having a work surface (44). A mechanism (38) is coupled to the body work surface (44) for shaping the body (32) to conform to a desired automobile body line. A sanding member (64) may be coupled to the body (32). The apparatus may further include a handle (75) removably coupled to the body.

Claims:
What is claimed is:
1. | An apparatus for repairing damaged automobile body lines the apparatus comprising: a support member having a work surface; and means coupled to the work surface for shaping the body to conform to a desired automobile body line. |
2. | The apparatus of claim 1, further including a sanding member coupled to the body. |
3. | The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the support member is formed of a generally flexible material, and wherein the means for shaping includes a formable member coupled to the body. |
4. | The apparatus of claim 3, wherein the formable member is a malleable member embedded within the body. |
5. | The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the means coupled to the work surface is a formable layer. |
6. | A formable spreader for repairing damaged automobile body lines, the formable spreader comprising: a body member having a gripping end and a spreading end; and a mechanism coupled to the spreading end for forming the body member to a desired shape. |
7. | The formable spreader of claim 6, wherein the formable spreader is made of a generally flexible material. |
8. | The formable spreader of claim 7, wherein the mechanism includes a formable member embedded in the spreading end. |
9. | A formable spreader for repairing damaged automobile body lines, the formable spreader comprising: a generally rigid body having a gripping end and a spreading end; and a member coupled to the spreading end which may be formed to a desired body line shape. |
10. | The formable spreader of claim 9, wherein the member coupled to the spreading end is responsive to a stimulus for forming the member to the desired body line shape. |
11. | The formable spreader of claim 9, wherein the member includes a reactant responsive to a stimulus for shaping the member to the desired body line shape. |
12. | The formable spreader of claim 11, further including a sanding member coupled to the spreading member. |
13. | A sanding assembly for use in sanding a curved surface, the sanding assembly comprising: a first layer; a formable second layer coupled to the first layer, the second layer having a shape corresponding to the curved surface; and a sanding member coupled to the second layer. |
14. | The sanding assembly of claim 13, further comprising a handle coupled to the first layer. |
15. | The sanding assembly of claim 14, wherein the handle is removable. |
16. | The sanding assembly of claim 13, wherein the second layer includes a reactant responsive to a stimulus. |
17. | The sanding assembly of claim 16, further wherein an ampule containing the stimulus located within the second layer . |
18. | The sanding assembly of claim 13, wherein the second layer is formed of sponge. |
19. | The sanding assembly of claim 13, wherein the second layer is formed of a polymeric material. |
20. | The sanding assembly of claim 13, wherein the sanding member includes hook and loop sandpaper. |
21. | A sanding assembly for use in sanding curved surfaces, the sanding assembly comprising: a sanding shoe; and a handle assembly removaby coupled to the sanding shoe. |
22. | The sanding assembly of claim 21, wherein the handle assembly includes: a curved body having a first end and a second end; a fore handle coupled to the first end; and a heal member coupled to the curved body second end. |
23. | The sanding assembly of claim 22, wherein the fore handle is relatively flat. |
24. | The sanding assembly of claim 21, wherein the handle assembly includes: a female member secured to the sanding shoe; and a male member removably coupled to the female member. |
25. | The sanding assembly of claim 21, wherein the sanding shoe is formable to a desired contour shape. |
