A layered lithium nickel manganese cobalt composite oxide powder for material of positive electrode of lithium secondary battery that when used as a material of positive electrode of lithium secondary battery, can attain realization of not only cost reduction and high safety but also enhancement of battery performance. There is provided a layered lithium nickel manganese cobalt composite oxide powder for material of positive electrode of lithium secondary battery, produced by aggregation of primary particles into secondary particles. The composition of the composite oxide powder is represented by the formula: Li_1+zNi_xMn_yCo_1-x-yO_&dgr (I) (wherein 05 &ohm ·cm. When the concentration of contained carbon is represented by C (wt.%) and the BET specific surface area by S (m²/g), the value of C/S thereof is ≤ 0.025. Not only cost reduction and high safety but also enhancement of battery performance can be realized by, within a limited composition range, reducing the volume resistivity to ≤ specified value and further markedly lowering the concentration of contained carbon.
