A lithium secondary battery comprising a negative electrode which is obtained by sintering a mixture layer including active material particles containing silicon and/or a silicon alloy and a binder on the surface of a collector composed of a conductive metal foil, a positive electrode, and an nonaqueous electrolyte is characterized in that carbon dioxide is dissolved in the nonaqueous electrolyte.
