Abstract:

A raw material for brake discs which has such temper softening resistance as to keep hardness (HRC) of 31 or above even after having been tempered at 700°C for one hour. Specifically, a low-carbon martensitic Cr-containing steel which contains C: 0.02 to 0.10%, N: 0.02 to 0.10%, with the sum of C and N being 0.08 to 0.16%, Si: 0.5% or less, Al: 0.1% or less, Mn: 0.3 to 3.0%, Cr: 10.5 to 13.5%, Nb: 0.05 to 0.60%, V: 0.15 to 0.80%, with the sum of Nb and V being 0.25 to 0.95%, Ni: 0.02 to 2.0%, and Cu: 1.5% or less, and which has an Fp value of 80.0 to 96.0 (wherein Fp = -230C + 5Si – 5Mn – 6Cu + 10Cr – 12Ni + 32Nb + 22V + 12Mo + 8W + 10Ta + 40Al – 220N), and exhibits a post-quenching hardness (HRC) of 31 to 40 and a post-tempering hardness (HRC) of 31 or above after having been tempered at 700°C for one hour.
