Abstract:
[Problem] To provide a machine tool and a cutting method with which the inclined face of a workpiece can be precisely machined. [Solution] A machine tool 100 to cut a workpiece W having an inclined face Wa , comprising a main shaft 10 that holds and rotates the workpiece W , a tool rest 20 that retains a cutting tool T to cut the inclined face Wa of the workpiece W , and a movement device 30 that causes the workpiece W to move relative to the cutting tool T in the direction of motion R that at least includes a Y-direction that is orthogonal to both a Z - direction that is parallel to the axis AX of the main shaft 10 and an X - direction that is orthogonal to the Z - direction and that specifies the amount to cut from the workpiece W, wherein the movement device 30 has a Y-direction guide 35 , on the tool rest 20, to guide motion of the cutting tool T in the Y-direction, and the Y-direction guide 35 comprises a guide face 21a along a face S2 that is orthogonal to the direction of a thrust force F2 when cutting the inclined face Wa with the cutting tool T.
