Abstract:
The purpose of the present invention is to reduce the risk that a coil of a solenoid which drives an IC contact block will break due to overheating. A control unit 100 of a card reader 1 carries out an IC contact retaining step S11 of continuously supplying electricity to a solenoid 63 and pressing an IC contact block 9 against a card 2, and a holding voltage reduction step S12 of preserving the IC contact block 9 in the state of having been pressed against the card 2 by carrying out a chopper control which repeats switching on and off the supplying of electricity to the solenoid 63. In addition, the control unit 100 carries out the chopper control while reducing a duty cycle in stages, and stores in a storage unit 101 a duty cycle D which is one stage previous to the first duty cycle whereat an assessment has been made that the IC contact block 9 is not retained in a spring contact position 9B (that is, a sensor 69 is switched off). Thereafter, the chopper control is carried out using the duty cycle D which is stored in the storage unit 101.
