Provided are a method for producing 6- or 8-demethylnobiletin and use thereof.　A method for producing 6- or 8-demethylnobiletin (I) that comprises subjecting a β-diketone compound (IV), which is obtained by condensing a dimethoxybenzoic acid derivative (III) with a compound (II), to deprotection and ring condensation reactions. [In the formula: one of R1a and R2a represents a methyl group and the other represents a methoxymethyl group; R3 represents a benzotriazolyl group; and R1 and R2 correspond to R1a and R2a respectively, and one represents a hydrogen atom and the other represents a methyl group.]
