CLAIMS

The EZ-RISER is designed as a mobility tool to assist in the reduction of muscle and joint aches and pains associate with the lower body when lowering oneself to the ground and rising again to a standing position. Many persons, mainly including older people but also including the handicapped and persons recovering from surgery and sports injury refrain from engaging in activities that cause pain and discomfort. When using the EZ-RISER the user experiences less, and in some cases far less or no pain and discomfort and extends their activities, for instance, in the garden, for several more years. The EZ-RISER also enables users to climb stairs and recover items dropped on the floor or ground.

The EZ-RISER provides maximum leverage by transferring muscle power from the back and knees to the upper body, namely, arms and shoulders. For maximum effectiveness - leverage and safety - the EZ-RISER must only be used on flat surfaces with weight applied vertically.

The rubberized handle provides comfort and assurance and the rubberized boot on the foot provides both comfort and security being an anti-slip material.

Description:
MOBILITY ASSISTANCE TOOL

MECHANICAL DESCRIPTION

The EZ-RISER device consists of four parts, top to bottom, as follows: a. The 'D' handle.

b. EPDM (rubberized material) grip on 'D' handle.

c. The stale or body of the EZ-Riser

d. The EPDM (rubberized material) boot.

The 'D' handle is made from extruded polypropylene with the ergonomically moulded EPDM grip is otherwise of standard design similar to that found on garden tools. The 'D' handle measures 4 - 13/16ths of an inch across and 7 - 9/16ths inch vertically. The base of the 'D' handle is hollow to accept the top of the stale.

The stale or body of the EZ-RISER is similarly made from polypropylene and measures 7-5/8th inch from the base to the joint with the 'D' handle. The diameter of the stale is 1 ¾ inches with a 1-1/2 inch diameter extension at the top to fit within the aperture at the bottom of the 'D' handle.

The 'D' handle and the stale are affixed using a contact cement.

At the base of the moulded stale is a 5-1/2 diameter foot with a depth of 3/8 th inch. The base has a recession around the top of the foot to which the boot is attached.

The EPDM rubberized boot is securely and permanently attached to the foot of the stale and is approximately 1/8 inch in depth.

The overall height of the EZ-RISER Device is 15-3/16 inch with a 5-1/2 inch diameter base. The name 'EΖ-RISER' is moulded into the foot.

A section of the lower 'D' handle is designed to accommodate a pannier or two pocket hanging accessory which is affixed with hook and loop Vclcro.

The PANNIER is an accessory device (sec sketch (c)) that attaches through the 'D' handle by means of Velcro (hook attached to pannier and loop attached to E-ZRISER). This simple accessory enables the user to carry cell phone, keys^ medication, etc, when, for instance, working in the garden. There are two pockets each measuring 5" x 5". One side is clearly pattern distinctive from the other side. USER NEED

The EZ-RISER Device is a tool to be used specifically by older persons, handicapped persons and those recovering from surgery and sports injuries. Older people very commonly have aches and pains associated with lowering themselves to the ground or on their knees and usually even greater inability to rise again to a standing position. Thus many tasks in the garden, home and workplace are painful, difficult and, in some cases, not possible. In many instances such activities have to be denied for physical inability. Persons in this category may also have difficulty shuffling on their knees and climbing short flights of steps. People engaging in these activities have to rely upon a nearby structure or another person in order for them to rise to a standing position.

There is no device specifically designed to fulfil this quality of life challenges.

INVENTOR AND INVENTION

The EZ-RISER was invented by Stanley J. Stanley when working in his garden. He devised a simple tool using a handle, stale and a circle cut from plywood. He found that his prototype device was of great help, offering maneuverability in moving around on his knees and rising to a standing position. Friends and relatives were instantly impressed with the device and wanted one themselves. It was decided to apply for a patent in Canada and the United States. The EZ- RISER has found favour in many garden centres across Canada and has attracted the interest of television shopping channels in several, as many as seven, countries. The name of the product EZ-RISER in North America is likely to be labelled 'EASY RISER' in other countries including the European Onion, Australia, New Zealand, etc. A company - called EASYRISER Mobility Ltd. has been formed to accelerate marketing following a possible successful international application.
