Abstract:
A process is provided which enables easy preparation of (S)−&agr −halomethylpyridinemethanol derivatives useful as intermediates of drugs from inexpensive raw materials. Specifically, an (S)−&agr −halomethylpyridinemethanol derivative is prepared by reducing an inexpensively available 2−halo− acetylpyridine derivative (S)−selectively by the use of an enzyme source capable of reducing the carbonyl group of the derivative (S)−selectively. Further, a purified (S)−&agr −halomethy−3− pyridinemethanol derivative hydrohalide can be isolated as a crystal from a contaminated (S)−&agr −halomethyl−3−pyridine− methanol derivative by the use of a hydrohalic acid and an organic solvent.
