Abstract:

A particulate matter treating device promotes the agglomeration of particulate matter. A particulate matter treating device (1) is provided with an electrode (5) which is provided in the exhaust gas discharge passage (3) of an internal combustion engine. The electrode (5) extends from the wall surface of the exhaust gas discharge passage (3) to the inside of the exhaust gas discharge passage (3), bends at a bend section (51) to the upstream side or the downstream side in the direction (B) of flow of exhaust gas, and extends to the upstream side or the downstream side in the direction (B) of flow of the exhaust gas. The electrode (5) is formed so that the electric field strength between the electrode (5) and the wall surface of the exhaust gas discharge passage (3) is higher on the upstream side than on the downstream side.
