Abstract:
A process for producing a bromomethyl-substituted aromatic carboxylic ester compound represented by the formula (II), characterized by reacting a compound represented by the formula (I) with bromine in the presence of a free-radical initiator and an oxidizing agent. (In the formulae, R1 represents lower alkyl or aralkyl; X represents a bond or an aromatic ring; and Y represents a bond or a divalent group unreactive with bromine.) By the process, a bromomethyl-substituted aromatic carboxylic ester compound represented by the formula (II), which is useful as an intermediate for medicines, e.g., a compound having an angiotensin II antagonistic activity, can be industrially more advantageously produced than in conventional techniques.
