A process for producing an optical fiber base in which iron impurity diminution can be realized at low cost. The process for producing an optical fiber base includes a glass synthesis step for forming a glass region which becomes at least part of the core region of an optical fiber. This glass synthesis step comprises: a deposition step in which fine glass particles containing aluminum element are deposited in a glass pipe by the chemical vapor deposition method; and a clarification step in which a transparent glass is obtained from the deposit of fine glass particles obtained. In the deposition step, a feed gas containing oxygen element and aluminum element in an O/Al ratio of 20 or lower is fed to the inside of the glass pipe to synthesize fine glass particles on the inner wall of the glass pipe. In the clarification step, the deposit of fine glass particles is heated to obtain a transparent glass from the deposit of fine glass particles. The transparent glass formed in this clarification step becomes part of the core region.
