The present application relates to the technical field of display and provides a quantum dot material, a patterning method for a quantum dot film layer, and a quantum dot display device. The quantum dot material comprises a quantum dot body and a ligand. The ligand comprises: a coordination group, a decomposable group, and an energy transfer group. The decomposable group is configured to be capable of decomposing and generating a polarity change group. The energy transfer group is configured to be capable of transferring carriers in the quantum dot material and preventing the quantum dot body from emitting light. When a patterned quantum dot film layer is prepared, a quantum dot film is shielded by a mask, and light is irradiated to a partial area of the quantum dot film, so that the area of the quantum dot material irradiated by light is decomposed and generates a polarity change group, the quantum dot film is cleaned by using a good solvent of the quantum dot material to complete patterning, and the polarity change group is insoluble in the good solvent of the quantum dot material. According to the patterning method for the quantum dot film layer, the damage to the film layer caused by developing the quantum dot film by using an alkaline solution can be avoided.
