Title:
SEQUESTRATION OF Abeta IN THE PERIPHERY IN THE ABSENCE OF IMMUNOMODULATING AGENT AS A THERAPEUTIC APPROACH FOR THE TREATMENT OR PREVENTION OF BETA-AMYLOID RELATED DISEASES
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO2003051374
Kind Code:
A3
Abstract:
The present invention describes a method of administering an Aß-binding agent or drug which has affinity for amyloid beta (Aß) in the periphery (blood) and reducing Aß levels in the brain without the need for the agent or drug to enter the brain itself. The Aß-binding agents utilized in the methods of the invention are preferably non-immunomodulating agents (e.g., antigenic peptides or antibodies) and bind to Aß in the periphery, or blood. Such compounds do not significantly cross the blood/brain barrier, and yet they lower amyloid (Aß) levels in the brain, thereby serving as safer, therapeutic and prophylactic treatments against diseases associated with Aß in the brain, e.g., Alzheimer's Disease and amyloid angiopathy, as well as against other AD-related amyloidoses.
