Abstract:

A seal device (1) is provided with an annular seal part (5) formed from an elastic material. A main lip (10) in sliding contact with an outer peripheral surface (S1) of a rotating shaft (S), and a vacuum-space-side inclined surface (11) that gradually enlarges in diameter from the main lip (10) toward a vacuum space (V), are formed in the inner peripheral surface of the seal part (5). A first annular protuberance (20) in sliding contact with the outer peripheral surface of the rotating shaft (S), and a second annular protuberance (21) arranged between the main lip (10) and the first annular protuberance (20), are formed in the vacuum-space-side inclined surface (11), the second annular protuberance protruding radially inward. The second annular protuberance (21) is formed so as to not be in sliding contact with the rotating shaft (S) during the initial stage of use of the seal device (1), and to begin sliding contact with the rotating shaft (S) when the main lip (10) is worn away to a degree such that the necessary sealing cannot be maintained.
