Abstract:
The present invention provides a service device that can prevent the unauthorized use of consumable products by preventing the unauthorized rewriting of the remaining amount of content in a consumable product without the use of encryption. The consumable product (200) is removable from the service device (100) and has a memory (201). The memory (201) includes: a first memory area that rewritably records the remaining amount of content in the consumable product (200); and a plurality of second memory areas that specify the states of the remaining amount of content in the consumable product (200) that is recorded in the first memory area. The service device (100) reads out the remaining amount of content in the consumable product (200) that is recorded in the first memory area, determines whether or not the remaining amount of content in the consumable product (200) that has been read out is located between the state as specified by the second memory area that is in a write-protect state and the state as specified by the second memory area that is in a writable state, and determines that the consumable product (200) is an authentic product if the remaining amount of content in the consumable product (200) is located therebetween but determines that the consumable product (200) is a counterfeit product if the remaining amount of content in the consumable product (200) is not located therebetween.
