Title:
SPHERICAL DIELECTRIC LENS WITH VARIABLE REFRACTIVE INDEX
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/1995/029517
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
The proposed dielectric lens with variable refractive index consists of interconnected modules (1, 4, 7, 9, 12) made of homogeneous dielectric materials with differing permittivities ('epsilon') and configured in accordance with an established law governing the variation of permittivity with lens radius (r), corresponding to the law governing the variation in the refractive index (n) of the lens. The modules (1, 4, 7, 9, 12) of the inner layers, which form a central cubic core inscribed within a sphere, are cubic in shape and equal in size, while the outer modules (1, 4, 7, 9, 12) are spherical at their outer surface so that the said modules (1, 4, 7, 9, 12) when connected to the modules (1, 4, 7, 9, 12) of the inner layers complete the central core to form a sphere. Grooves (2, 5, 8, 10, 13, 16, 15) which widen towards the base are provided on at least two face of each module (1, 4, 7, 9, 12) along the entire length of the face; also, or alternatively, provided are projections (3, 11, 14), pairs of these elements have matching cross sections joining the modules (1, 4, 7, 9, 12) to form a spherical lens surface. Various combinations of design of grooves and projections at the module faces (1, 4, 7, 9, 12) are proposed.
