Steel for a mooring chain that has a chemical composition comprising, in mass%, C: 0.15-0.45%, Si: 0.6% or less, Mn: 1.00-2.50%, P: 0.1% or less, S: 0.05% or less, Al: 0.1% or less, N: 0.01% or less, Cu: 0.01-1.0%, Ni: 0.01-5.0%, Cr: 0.1% or less, Sn: 0-0.5%, Sb: 0-0.5%, Mo: 0-1.0%, W: 0-1.0%, V: 0-1.0%, Ca: 0-0.01%, Mg: 0-0.01%, REM: 0-0.01%, Nb: 0-0.1%, Ti: 0-0.1%, B: 0-0.01%, remainder: Fe and impurities, and satisfies [(1-1.35 Cu)(1-0.37 Ni) + 0.25 Cr ≦ 0.80] and [Cu/Ni ≦ 5.0], and a mooring chain that uses the steel for a mooring chain.
