A support device comprising: a gripping section (18) provided with clamps in which an upper plate and a lower plate are superposed to form a V-shaped groove; a gripping section-controlling unit (19) that makes it possible to vary the spacing between the clamps between a spacing of at least the diameter of an electrode holder (24), which has an electrode-feeding mechanism, and a spacing that is the same as the electrode diameter; a gripping section-controlling unit movement shaft motor (17) that makes it possible to vary the height of the gripping section (18) between a height such that the clamps are positioned below the electrode holder edge of the electrode holder (24), which has an electrode-feeding mechanism, that is mounted on an electrode holder-gripping unit (15) and a height such that the clamps raise the electrode holder edge of the electrode holder (24), which has an electrode-feeding mechanism, that is mounted on the electrode holder-gripping unit (15); and an electrode-gripping unit (20) capable of gripping an electrode (8) below the gripping section (18). For one of the pair of clamps, the plates are superposed with the upper plate positioned in front and the lower plate positioned in back, and for the other of the pair of clamps, the plates are superposed with the lower plate positioned in front and the upper plate positioned in back.
